Heads up

Postby Nan48 » September 12th, 2010, 3:14 am

The free speech police are at it again. It has been brought to our attention that an organization called Righthaven LLC is suing websites for using material from the Las Vegas Review-Journal. We would caution message board members to not use any articles from this news source. Out of necessity, any posted articles from the Review Journal will be removed.

Here are some links explaining the situation:

Thanks for your cooperation.

Well, sort of. FR was sued by the Washington Post, and by someone else, because members were taking intact articles and posting them, thus reducing the traffic to the Post's site. They reached an agreement that only portions of the articles, plus links, could be posted. (This resulted in Freepers dubbing the Post as the "Washington Compost.")

In this case(s), Righthaven is suing people without even giving them notice in advance of any kind of infringement before the lawsuit was filed, so that the offending articles can be removed. If this is a way for the R-J to make some money for their dying paper, this is not how to do it. I only see it as hurting them in the end because of the unfairness of it--not to mention violation of fair-use laws and free speech guaranteed by the Constitution.
