Did Megyn Kelly deserve to get fired? Readers react

Daytime television was turned on its head this week after Megyn Kelly ignited a firestorm during a recent taping of her NBC talk show. During a discussion on Tuesday about controversial Halloween costumes, Kelly appeared to defend the use of “blackface” in the context of dressing up as a character.

“You do get in trouble if you are a white person who puts on blackface on Halloween, or a black person who puts on whiteface for Halloween. Like, when I was a kid, that was OK, as long as you were dressing up as like a character,” she said on Tuesday.

The backlash was swift. Despite a tearful on-air apology the following day, Kelly’s show shifted into unplanned reruns for the rest of the week. Then the official word from NBC arrived on Friday: Megyn Kelly is out. Does the punishment fit the crime? Yahoo readers overwhelmingly disagree.

With over 3,400 comments (and counting), the conversation continues with no end in sight, and is packed with supporters who think the host is being treated unfairly.

I am not a fan BUT…..she said nothing that deserves punishment…..NOTHING!!!!” exclaimed one user. “This is why nobody watches network TV anymore. Everyone is too paralyzed to broach sensitive topics anymore,” another person wrote. A common theme seemed to be that Kelly’s comments were taken out of context. “If you watch what she said and how she said it you would not be offended. I’m tired of this stuff being overblown,” a user wrote.

Comments about liking Kelly were few and far between, but even those who had a negative view of her as a person felt her apology was sincere. “Do think it’s wrong to wear blackface any time, not just Halloween. And I very much agree with her apologizing about it because… how do you not know that? But…. I think still getting on her case after she apologized is a bit too much,” wrote a commenter. Another person didn’t seem shocked at all about the controversy: “Why is anyone surprised at her most recent comments? Her previous employer was fox!!!”
