Youth rally for Benedict XVI
By Matt C. Abbott
Some good news for a change. At least for faithful Catholics.
On April 20, a sizable number of young Catholics rallied in support of the new pope, Benedict XVI, in front of Chicago's Holy Name Cathedral. And to think that just days earlier at that same location, a group of dissident nuns and lay women spent time creating pink smoke in protest of the male-only priesthood.
Organized by the ubiquitous Mary Kelly Ames, respect life coordinator for St. Mary of the Angels parish (and who held an "Authentic Feminists for Benedict XVI" sign), the rally included a large contingent from St. John Cantius parish, decked out in the papal colors of yellow and white. They marched from St. John Cantius to Holy Name — a distance of several blocks — and carried signs, papal flags, and a statue of the Blessed Virgin Mary.
Elissa Klein, one of the participants, was especially excited about the event, which, thankfully, was covered in a fair manner by local media.
"It's awesome that we were able to do this to show the world our love and respect for our Holy Father," said Elissa. "What a great time to be Catholic!"
The following are five photos from the rally (provided by Jakub Rzepka).
