The blurred line
By Brad Turner

I have recently been watching with interest as the individuals involved in the Minutemen project has made their way to Washington DC. I see the ultimatum they have laid down before the President of the United States.........build a way with federal funds or we will build one with private funds, and do it more efficiently than you can. Senator Frist is going to introduce "sweeping" legislation that will supposedly make us safer, but does nothing to punish the illegals that are already in the country, and does not mention anything about a wall being built to protect our borders. This is a man who says he is a conservative, and wants to be the party's nominee for 2008?

The idea of a wall has garnered very little support among Republicans, the so called conservative party of the country. Why? Where have we gone away from our core beliefs? What has made us switch our compass to a more moderate goal? How can so many Republicans champion Ronald Reagan as their political hero, but act more like his Ronald McDonald when it comes to the issues at hand? Smile enough and people will just assume everything is good in the playground of America. The problem is there is no strength in the Republican backbone right now.

Part of the problem lies with the incompetence of the Democratic Party. Don't believe me? Witness the last two candidates they have submitted for final approval in the nationwide exam. Both received failing grades, and left the Democratic Party scratching their heads in disbelief that America could reject two men who garner about as much excitement as a free William Hung concert. An entertaining idea, but the same old show.

This is a party who has consistently lied to the black community by using race and institutionalized slavery cleverly hidden as "social programs" to prevent real progress in urban communities. Thankfully a number of black leaders are emerging, who have shed the shackles of traditional voting "because that is the way we have always done it" and examined the core basics of being a Republican. They see that a lower tax means more money for urban families to bring home. They recognize that public schools in urban areas are failing, and the children they are supposed to help fall farther behind the curve because liberals in the Democrat party feel the way to fix it is eliminate school choice and throw more money at a problem that can't be financially fixed. The very people they claim they want to help, they hurt and weaken. They allow the system to perpetuate itself generation after generation.

But what Republican Party are they coming to now? It certainly isn't the party of Barry Goldwater, and it doesn't look like there is a Ronald Reagan to be found either. When the office of the President is controlled by people who reference Reagan as their idol, yet the federal spending is the highest in our history, the borders remain open and dangerous, federal programs grow everyday, and not a true conservative can be found unless you closely examine the party, the verdict is in. The Republican Party has lost its compass and is clearly wandering in the wilderness.

Our backbone is gone, and nobody seems to be looking for it. There is no urgency, no rush to recapture the base that elected our party to office. The most insulting thing is we hear the current Republican leadership trying to talk like they are conservatives, but reality tells us a different tale. They have vanished, and play us for fools. It is time we demand the conservative party we helped elect to lead all 3 branches of government.

The 2006 midterm elections are rapidly approaching, but our country is confused. Both parties look the same, and there is very little difference. During the presidential debates, could you really tell a difference? Why are the debates not open to ALL candidates, regardless of where they stand in political polling data? An analogy I heard was fitting. The Democrats are going over the cliff at 100 MPH, while the Republicans follow them at 65 MPH. This illegal alien fiasco is a perfect example. We have been invaded without the use of a single gun, and NOBODY on the Republican side has made more than a token effort to stop it. Why? What are we afraid of? Fear of being labeled a racist? Has amnesty become the sensitive word of the day for Republicans? Is it wrong to protect your country from an illegal invasion that happens 24 hours a day, 7 days a week? In our country's past it would not be called racist, it would be called duty and honor.

Big government has never worked. No country in history has ever succeeded when it has allowed government to overrun it's boundaries of society, yet countries still try. Is America headed down that same path? I say yes, but it is not too late to change that course! If the Republican Party can regain its conservative zeal, and truly focus on what the proper role of government is and this country can be turned back to the course the Founding Fathers intended.

It is not too late for conservatives to rally again, and save the Republican Party. More importantly to save our country from the path of a one party system we are being taken down. Our country needs good debate from all points of view, be it conservative or liberal. It is what makes America great and the envy of the world. We encourage the free exchange of ideas. The problem is the debate now all sounds the same. The two party system has but one voice.

Who will emerge from the Republican Party to change our path? Our very future and system of ideals depends on a few brave souls to stand up for what is right, what is conservative, and what we require in our leaders. We are heading over the cliff, but there is enough time to apply the brakes, and get back on the road.
