A gulf that cannot be bridged
By Dennis Campbell

But mark this: There will be terrible times in the last days. People will be lovers of themselves, lovers of money, boastful, proud, abusive, disobedient to their parents, ungrateful, unholy, without love, unforgiving, slanderous, without self-control, brutal, not lovers of the good, treacherous, rash, conceited, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God...loaded down with sins and...swayed by all kinds of evil desires....
2Timothy 3:1-9

When a homosexual activist, referring to events prompted by the mayor of San Francisco's order that licenses be issued for same-sex marriages in contravention of California law, said that "It is as if a damn has been broken," he doubtless had but a weak grasp on the enormity of his statement.

A damn has been broken indeed, but little does this person understand what was being constrained by that wall. The flood of dissipation and debauchery unleashed likely will drown what is left of America in a torrent of depravity as our most-cherished institutions crumble.

And try as we might to convince ourselves otherwise, there probably is little that conservatives and Christians can do to stop it, for two reasons:

1) The left, which embraces anything sordid, low and contrary to the constitutional and moral principles that formed the original foundation of America, has the real power. Rush Limbaugh's comment that we no longer can say that the President is the most powerful man in the world is true: Real power today lies in the hands of activist judges, to whom we have surrendered the right to overturn any legitimate legislation with which they may disagree and to substitute their own laws for the will of the people.

Not only does the left control the judiciary, it has an iron grip on the other real power centers of America: The education system, which increasingly churns out legions of half-educated young people with not the slightest understanding of our founding principles, the Constitution or our republican form of government; and the mass media, which, despite the disingenuous protestations of liberals, is firmly under their control.

Thus the primary dissemination of information, from kindergarten through adulthood, is controlled by those whose aim is nothing less than the reformation of America, from the vision of James Madison and Thomas Jefferson to that of Ted Kennedy and Hillary Clinton. Appalling as it may be to those who love freedom, the Constitution and the high moral principles once undergirding America, they are succeeding.

2) If, as many believe, we are in what the Bible refers to as the Last Days or End Times, it is necessary for America to diminish. An America strong militarily, economically, spiritually and morally could stand against the world if it were to oppose us in its entirety. Yet, the Bible clearly speaks of things that will happen in the end, and clearly they will happen without America. The day will come, and it may be soon, that we will cease to be the prime mover in world events.

This brings us to the real problem: There is an unbridgeable gulf between Christians, who pattern their lives as best they can after Biblical principles, and those who worship the creature rather than the creator, who, in the words of the Apostle Paul, "exchanged the truth of God for a lie, and worshiped and served created things...."

Marriage between homosexuals is the perfect example of this gulf.

Secularists view marriage as a mere social construct, a civil ordinance, and see no reason why it cannot be applicable to persons of the same sex.

Christians, on the other hand, see marriage as instituted by God between a man and a woman: "For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and they will become one flesh." We cannot and must not give our approval in any way to any form of marriage or the so-called "civil unions" that unite a man with a man or a woman with a woman.

Unfortunately, as noted above, our influence on American life and culture is waning as the left has cunningly seized control of the institutions which shape our country. That is not going to change, the rise of Fox News and David Horowitz's academic bill of rights notwithstanding.

Brace yourselves. The downhill slide has just gotten steeper, and it is going to be a breathtaking ride to an end that none of us can predict with certainty, knowing only that the America we know soon will be just the America we knew.
