Wal-Mart: repenting or pandering?
By Madeline Crabb

For those of you who don't get AFA Alerts, you may not know what's just happened with the Wal-Mart Thanksgiving boycott.

Both AFA and NewsMax.com are reporting that Wal-Mart has decided to no longer support "controversial" issues and groups. The corporate statement from the Wal-Mart website reads:

Respect for the individual is one of the core values that have made us into the company we are today. We take pride in the fact that we treat every customer, every supplier and every member of our individual communities fairly and equally.

We are working hard to make our corporate contributions reflect the values of our customers, communities, and associates. As Sam Walton said, "Each Wal-Mart store should reflect the values of its customers and support the vision they hold for their community.

Wal-Mart will not make corporate contributions to support or oppose highly controversial issues unless they directly relate to our ability to serve our customers.

Wal-Mart does not have a position on same sex marriage and we do not give preference to gay or lesbian suppliers. Wal-Mart does have a strong commitment to diversity among our associates and against discrimination everywhere.

While AFA seems excited about this statement, and has agreed to call off the boycott, I wonder if we are premature in running back to Wal-Mart with open arms.

Mona Williams, Wal-Mart's vice president of communications, said in a telephone interview with News Max that her company would continue working with the Gay and Lesbian Chamber of Commerce and other gay-rights groups on specific issues such as workplace equality. (Uh huh, and what are the other issues?)

I have already reported Wal-Mart's involvement with the National Gay and Lesbian Chamber of Commerce (NGLCC). You can go to their website at www.nglcc.org to learn more about them, and what they require for their members — in this case, corporate sponsors that have the special classification of "Corporate Visionaries." Webster says a visionary has unusually keen foresight. Exactly what kind of keen foresight do Wal-Mart and Sam's Club have for the homosexual community? Apparently homosexuals are wooing them. Aren't they wooing back?

Moreover, if these companies are devoted to doing only those things that "directly relate to our ability to serve our customers," then why is it so important for them to be involved with the NGLCC? This sends a very negative message to the Christian community they are trying to win back. They badly need our money this holiday season. Why do you think they waited until the day before Thanksgiving to make their announcement?

Folks, I suggest we give serious, prayerful thought to shopping at these companies. We already know the homosexual community is very aggressive and demanding regarding the promotion of its agenda. We know that companies cave to these demands. We know there is an increasing political correctness in corporate America that trivializes Christian beliefs. So as members of this homosexual chamber of commerce, what makes us think Wal-Mart won't cave to their demands? If they don't "toe the line" with the NGLCC, they won't be members very long. And apparently they are wooing the homosexual community for their business. Remember: It's always about the money.

The NGLCC is only about promoting business for the homosexual community. The homosexual agenda undermines traditional family values, and threatens the stability of marriage — one of the pillars of society.

Wal-Mart uses the buzzword — diversity — in their statement. Diversity can be read as homosexuality. If they want to reflect the "customers, communities, and their associates," as they say in their above statement, then their efforts to promote "diversity/homosexuality" undermines this goal. The majority of their customers, communities, and associates are not homosexuals. Hello! Who are they kidding? Certainly not me...how about you?

In their above statement, Wal-Mart says they do not take a stand on same-sex "marriage." Right. That's why they donated money to groups to block passage of marriage amendments on the November ballot. And wouldn't they have sent a stronger message to the overwhelming majority of straight, Christian Americans if they said they support and uphold traditional marriage, and traditional family values?

And what about all the pro-homosexual, and some vile, products they sell on their website?

My degree is in journalism and public relations. PR and marketing tools can be used for good purposes, but increasingly they are used to manipulate and "trick" people. I see Wal-Mart's statement as a carefully-crafted PR statement to take the pressure off their company from groups like AFA. Remember, when previously asked what they would do to combat Christian "boycotts," they said they wouldn't change their stance but simply further reduce their prices to win back the customers. Sounds like the Godfather making us an offer we can't refuse. But we can refuse, can't we?

One last thing...Wal-Mart decided this year to begin acknowledging Christmas, not just the holidays. I even saw a company spokesperson on one of the Fox News programs last week making a big deal out of restoring Christmas and respecting everyone's beliefs.

Then why has Sam's Club decided to delete Christmas, reverting instead to the politically-correct "Happy Holidays?" I submit these companies are "playing us," and I for one have made the decision to not support Wal-Mart until they can show me they are serious about upholding family values across this land.

It seems to me that Wal-Mart "speaks with forked tongue." They say one thing and do another. They actually think Americans aren't smart enough to see through the charade. I repeat: It's all about the money. Someone is either pandering to Americans for their money or their votes. Just when are we going to wise up?

In the end we must each make personal decisions about how and where we will spend God's money. The Word says that one day we will have to give an account for our words and actions. Let's seek God's direction on how we spend his money. There is something called "conviction" that can stop us from making wrong choices. I pray we are all heeding that still, small voice that speaks within us. To anyone willing to hear....
