An America divided?- -Part Four
By Madeline Crabb
We've heard politicians tell us that illegal immigration is a very complicated issue, one not easy to fix. Well, it would have been easy if they had seriously addressed it 25 years ago. Even President Reagan blew it on illegal immigration. Since he granted amnesty to a rather small number of illegals, multiplied millions have flooded over our borders figuring they, too, will be granted amnesty. The majority coming here have open hands with next to nothing to offer. They are unwilling to assimilate, and are here for what America will do for them.
Yes, we should have compassion for people who live in countries not as great as ours. But America gives billions of dollars in aid to many countries, including Mexico. What are they doing with all that benevolence? We are trying to help these countries out of their situations, but corruption or mismanagement of the monies prevents change. This is not the fault of the American people, but lies with the leaders of these countries.
The fact is that the United States cannot take in every orphan fleeing his country for a chance at the American dream. We simply can't afford to do it. The Center for Immigration Studies reports that "when all taxes are paid (direct and indirect), and all costs are considered, illegal households created a net fiscal deficit at the federal level of more than $10 billion in 2002." They estimate that amnesty for illegal aliens will cause the net fiscal deficit to grow to nearly $29 billion annually.
Furthermore, how much longer can our culture stand immigrants breaking our nation into many little nations? E pluribus unim means out of many, one. Instead it is becoming many from many. This is not good if we want to be a United States of America — one nation.
Don't we need to get control of this issue? It's not as complicated as the government claims. If politicians stop pandering to illegal immigrants and begin to do what is right for its citizens, they will pass real immigration reform — even build that much-needed fence on our southern border. It seems simple enough that if we start punishing ALL employers of illegals, and take away handouts and freebies, illegals will have no reason to be here. They will just go home.
Perhaps we need to start impeaching, or threatening to impeach judges who are usurping their power by overriding the will of the people. Many times communities and states are trying to pass reasonable legislation to curb immigration, or enforce already existing laws; but the Courts, thinking they know what's best for American citizens, make new laws. Instead of interpreting laws, judicial elitists in black robes assume roles intended for the duly elected legislators from city councilmen to US congressmen and senators. Can anyone say oligarchy? They need to be stopped, and it may indeed require drastic measures.
The issue of illegal immigration is dividing America, and will inevitably bankrupt a nation that is already in bad financial shape. An overwhelming majority of American citizens want serious measures taken to curb illegal immigration. Last time I heard, the majority rules. And as for votes, who cares. It is time for all elected officials to do what's best for its citizens — not first considering the feelings of illegal aliens. They also need to do all the right things for all the right reasons, not just for votes. Oh where, oh where did integrity go?
American citizens must have a reality check and decide what kind of America we want for our posterity. But then, we must be in agreement about what is best for a strong, united America. If we want to stop the destruction to our economy and culture, then we must decide what we are willing to give up, and what we are willing to pay to support the world's poor that want the America dream. There are limits to American generosity.
Pat Buchanan, Tom Tancredo, JD Hayworth, and others are predicting that the way we are headed, America will resemble a Third World country in less than 50 years. The signs are everywhere that this is already happening. So fellow American, is this what you want for your posterity? If your answer is no, then what are you going to do about it? Let's keep our nation united. To anyone willing to hear....
