What if?

I started the day like always, I rushed to get my coffee and catch up on the news before heading off to work. As I drove the same route like every other day, I failed to notice the beauty that surrounded me. The fall colors were at there peak and there was no clouds in the clear blue sky.
I noticed on my way to work, there was someone broke down with a flat tire on the highway. They stood next to the car like they needed help. I reasoned in my mine that I would be late for work if I stopped to help. I also thought surely some good soul behind me would stop and help.
As I was driving I was thinking about my father who is confined to a wheel chair. I worried that I had not spent enough time with him. I feared that I would get that call at work that he had been rushed to the hospital. I reasoned that I had other responsibilities that I had to meet. Surely dad would understand.
I was listening to one of my favorite bands to try and chill out before starting another work day. They were singing 'open your eyes.' Like any other day I was in a daze, not really listening to the words. You know, I had other things on my mind.
Then what happened next did open my eyes.
There was a breaking news report that terrorist had nuclear bombs in five cities. As you would know one of those cities was mine. They demanded Israel to leave Gaza and the Golan Heights along with the U.S. withdrawal from Iraq. They said the bombs would be activated within one week unless visible action was taken to meet their demands.
The scary thing was that most of the news pundits said the bombs would be activated no matter what action the U.S. took.
Then like a flash of light, I noticed the beauty of the day, thought about the person with a flat tire and my dad. Truly my eyes were open.
