Should Israel fear Barack Obama?
By Paul Craft
Two words will answer this important question — Iraq and Mahmoud Ahmadinejad.
Senator Obama has made it very clear that he would begin withdrawal of American troops from Iraq as soon as he becomes President. Regardless if you think President Bush made a mistake by attacking Iraq, the consequences of a premature withdrawal would be catastrophic.
The situation in Iraq has stabilized and Al-Qaeda is on the run. It was reported today that, "some leaders of Al-Qaeda in Iraq and other extremist groups are fleeing Iraq with cash to escape US forces and possibly to try to regroup outside the country, a senior US commander said Monday." With the U.S. and Iraqi government gaining control, the possible outcome of an Obama immediate withdrawal would give a free reign of terror in the Middle East. Without an American troop presence as a deterrent, the fleeing extremist groups would be emboldened to again begin their reign of terror. You can bet that Iran's President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad will try to take advantage of the situation.
Senator Obama has stated that he would seek talks with Mahmoud Ahmadinejad. Ahmadinejad is the man who has stated on repeated occasions that Israel should and will be destroyed. Can you really have talks with a man who makes such statements? The Iranian leader is a religious zealot like Bin Laden and Al-Qaeda. You do not seek talks with terrorist but work with governments to punish and contain Ahmadinejad.
I imagine that Israel is troubled by Obama's statements. At a time when measures are being considered to bomb Iran's nuclear sites, Obama thinks he can talk some sense into Mahmoud Ahmadinejad. Does anyone think that Ahmadinejad can be trusted?
I can imagine that Israelis are praying that Obama is not the next President of the United States.
