FannieMae/SallyMae-type "change" vs. Sarah Palin-type "change"
By Curtis Dahlgren
"The only ones who make things change are fanatics." — Cesar Chavez
"If you lie with dogs, you will rise with fleas."— Abraham Lincoln
FIRST, A FEW WORDS ABOUT THE WORD "CHANGE." It's "just a word," but some of the greatest writers of the last 400 years have had a few things to say about change:
Great things are done when men and mountains meet;
This is not done by jostling in the street.
— William Blake (1757-1827)
For all that moveth doth in Change delight
. . . the ever-whirling wheel of Change,
How Mutability in them doth play
Her cruel sports, to many men's decay . . .
— Edmund Spenser (1552-1599)
To defy Power, which seems Omnipotent;
To love and bear; to hope till Hope creates
From its own wreck the thing it contemplates;
Neither to change, nor falter, nor repent . . .
— Percy Shelley (1792-1822)
Change and decay in all around I see;
O Thou, who changest not, abide with me.
— Henry Francis Lyte (1793-1847)
To change the name, and not the letter,
Is a change for the worse, and not for the better.
— The Book of Days
The stone that is rolling can gather no moss,
For master and servant, oft changing is loss.
— Thomas Tusser (1524-1580)
"When it is not necessary to change, it is necessary not to change."
— Viscount Falkland (1600-1643)
"The more things change, the more they are the same."
— Alphonse Karr (1808-1890)
P.S. "Jesus Christ, the same yesterday, and today, and forever; be not carried about with divers and strange doctrines." [Paul]
"Change" even rhymes with strange, and this is the strangest election campaign I've ever seen. "One man's terrorist is another man's freedom fighter," said Yonan Alexander (Inst. for Studies in International Terrorism). Next week I'll go deeper into the subject of "revolution" (I guess some people think that terrorism is fine if it's intra-national and not "international).
It all depends on whose ox is getting gored, I guess. Sarah Palin must pose a great potential threat to a lot of old bulls out there, judging by the way the press has gone after her. As usual, the MSM "big deal" about the Alaska state highway patrol is going to boomerang on them. Far be it from me to say, but there are probably people out there in all 50 states who have met one or two highway patrolmen they wouldn't mind seeing fired. They can "relate" once again to the Palins.
As for "ethics investigations," John Stuart Mill said, "As often as a study is cultivated by narrow minds, they will draw from it narrow conclusions."
LET'S SEE: Mrs. Obama used to work with Bernardine Dohrn and Mr. Obama worked with Bill Ayres — while Mr. Palin spoke up for a little kid who was tazored by a state trooper. DUH. The "moral outrage" by the Left is lost on me. How is it that Cook County, Illinois is being held up as the epitome of "reform" and "ethical standards"?
