San Francisco, or what you call the mess that liberals can make when given the chance
By Gabriel Garnica
The first time my five-year old daughter offered to help make eggs, she made a mess all over the kitchen. While not thrilled at the prospect of cleaning up after her introduction to cooking, I was thrilled at her initiative, effort and desire to help. After all, I thought, she is just a child, and she showed such initiative. In the same way, we look at a young child's finger paintings as masterpieces of creativity, imagination and potential.
A child's masterpiece can often be an adult's foolishness, and nowhere is that reality more evident than with regard to the famed city by the bay.
The City of San Francisco is the eggs or the painting, liberals are the adults making the mess, and they want us to be impressed.
Maybe Their Heart, But Not Their Brains
Tony Bennett's classic tune still stirs my heart with memories of my first visit to this unique city. Its sloping streets are a pavement rollercoaster creating a multi-layered urban landscape in the palms of a breathtaking bay. The sheer beauty of its locale combines with its imposing history to create a city that cannot be ignored.
San Francisco's voice and attitude have always been liberal and, now, it is slowly becoming a spectacle of what unchained liberalism can do.
As cities go, San Francisco is part child, aged hippie, snappy yuppie, colorful drag queen, fist-pumping radical, illegal immigrant and homeless derelict all rolled into one. This mish-mish of faces reflects the jumble that is liberal thinking; preaching morality while protecting perversion, smirking in elitist intellectualism while butchering common sense and hugging a tree while smoking it.
San Francisco did not become what it is today overnight, but it did sink to its present mess through oversight. The more one considers this mess in the American kitchen, this urban finger painting, the more one wonders if any adults are running the show.
Sanctuary from Common Sense
Liberals are always telling us how well they can run things, how much better they can accomplish this and that. They love to wave their books, programs and ideas in our faces while boasting about how much smarter and more practical they are. As far as I am concerned, the proof is in the pudding, and San Francisco is their pudding.
Just look at how liberal compassion and sensitivity has given us a city which proudly declares itself a sanctuary for illegal immigrants while allowing dangerous, undocumented felons to run free and even uses tax dollars to shower them with all kinds of benefits as a cherry on top. http://michellemalkin.com/2008/08/03/san-francisco-values-650000-for-illegal-alien-teen-felons/
If using taxpayer dollars to provide free services to illegal immigrant felons is not enough, then one can move on to city and law enforcement officials who tolerate, protect, endorse and even praise public nudity and sexual lawlessness in the streets during the annual Folsom Street Fair, where no arrests for such behavior are made. Officials from the media offices of the city's police department, the mayor or House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, who represents the district, decline to comment on these events.
If Gavin Newsom is the king of this urban finger painting called San Francisco, then Nancy Pelosi is the queen.
Liberals often forget that social compassion and social responsibility only work when partnered with common sense, respect for the law and simple decency..
The Sanctuary Has Become a Shelter
San Francisco's homeless problem has become a raging epidemic, prompting writers to compare it to cities in third world nations. http://www.nypost.com/seven/08022008/postopinion/opedcolumnists/american_calcutta_122635.htm?page=2
This popular destination of tourists eager to fulfill their expectations is turning into an urban embarrassment no fog can conceal.
In typical fashion, the city's liberal leadership under Gavin Newsom has demonstrated a combination of indifference, incompetence and distorted priorities in dealing with this and many other issues facing the city. If this mayor exhibited as much passion, foresight and dedication to fixing what is wrong with the city as he does to defending and pushing his pet social and political issues, he might actually accomplish something positive for a change.
That San Francisco's mayor and city council can swagger about preaching to others about morality and doing what is right while presiding over such a mess merely speaks to their combined delusions of sanity and competence.
Conclusion
I will never forget looking out over the Golden Gate Bridge on my first visit to San Francisco, sadly seeing only its base beneath a dense fog. "You have to know the best times of the day to be here," said an amused local peeking at my dismay. "Otherwise you will be wasting your time taking pictures."
From the sad accounts of San Francisco today, it appears that all of the images one gets of this unique city largely depend on what time of the day one looks. Early morning accounts of the homeless tossed about many parts of the city attest to that. Likewise, I guess you have to get up pretty early in the morning to fool Americans that providing sanctuary, much less free services and benefits to dangerous felons is anything near compassionate, rational or sane. Hiding a dangerous criminal is foolish. Giving that dangerous criminal free services is absurd. Making his victims pay for those services is liberal.
Be it subsidizing criminality by illegal aliens, washing their hands regarding a rampant homelessness problem or tolerating and supporting public indecency, the city officials of San Francisco are glowing examples of how liberals with power and a sense of entitlement can make children making a mess with eggs or paint look mature by comparison.
Smug incompetence coupled with patronizing and arrogant preaching has been the hallmark of San Francisco's leadership for some time now. Come to think of it, this seems to be a recurring trait of all liberal leadership.
The more one looks at the mess that the so-called adults running San Francisco have made, one begins to interpret Tony Bennett's famous song in a different light. Perhaps it is not a case of people leaving their hearts in San Francisco as much as their hearts going out to a beautiful city which increasingly looks like a messy urban and social finger painting made by adults acting like children who proudly, defiantly and ignorantly want us to be impressed by their pathetic effort.
