America deserves better than Giuliani
By Adam Graham

Rudy Giuliani is being hailed in the media as the party's next savior. The Establishment see its new great leader who will create a large, permanent Republican majority.

However, my mind travels back to early in 1999 when George W. Bush led nationally in opinion polls by a rock solid 56-40 over Al Gore. His surrogates were talking about how Bush's election would mean the strengthening and permanence of the Republican majority in both houses and the birth of a dominate Compassionate Conservative majority that would cross racial lines.

During the primaries, the media didn't tell us about Bush being a threat to Democracy, or about a 20 year-old DUI from Maine, nor did you hear a whole lot of talks about him being AWOL from the Alabama National Guard. Bush was good, the right of center future of the GOP. Yet, after the primaries a new and dangerous George W. Bush emerged in the eyes of the media: a political lightweight who lacked gravitas. Then in late October, the DUI story came out and a razor thin election resulted in which it took 37 days to declare a winner in the presidential election.

After another hard-fought campaign in 2004, where the President became the most-hated and most-loved man in America, he won the election with less than 300 electoral votes. In Congress before Bush was elected, Republicans held 55 US Senate Seats, and 223 House Seats. Today, we hold 55 Senate Seats and 231 House Seats. It's hardly the groundswell that was promised and our gains among minorities have been modest at best.

The moral of the story is that predicting the future is dangerous. No matter how moderate our candidate is, he'll be vilified by the press and attacked as a far right extremist. Even now, as the Liberal press pushes Giuliani forward, its sharpening its knives.

His messy 2002 divorce will be fodder for the press, particularly his ex-wife's public allegation of "notorious adultery." John Kerry's divorce of Julie Steele was nearly two decades ago. By the time Reagan ran, it'd been 30 years since his first marriage to Jane Wyman had ended because he was "boring." How well will Giuliani fare with a recent nasty divorce? (see Jack Ryan in Illinois for example.)

The far left is ready for an all-out assault on Giuliani's eight years in Gracie Mansion, alleging numerous violations of Civil liberties. If Giuliani is the '08 nominee, what John Ashcroft's been through the last 4 years will seem like heaven.

As John Kerry can attest, these little things are important when running a campaign on character and leadership.

Need for a Leader

In the end, the nomination of Rudy Giuliani is sought for the wrong reason. As I write, millions of dollars are being added on to the national debt and we have a moral crisis that threatens to destroy our national character.

We cannot afford a President who thinks partial birth abortion is okay. We cannot afford a President who has no plans or ideas to move our nation forward, only a resume and their handling of a single crisis.

There are deep problems in our nation that require serious solutions. The rampant, run-away growth of government has to be stopped before it devours the future of America. It has been said time and time again that we must change hearts and minds on the moral issues of our time. Yet, we shall fail in that task if we nominate a pro-partial birth abortion, pro-gay rights candidate for the presidency.

Some may ask, "What about the war on terror?" As I look at the list of Presidential candidate such as Lindsey Graham, Mark Sanford, Rick Santorum, Bill First, and John McCain, I have no doubt that each will fight terrorism and continue the work of the Bush Administration. All understands the grave threats facing us in the arena of terrorism.

America needs more than someone who will take on terrorism. It needs a President who understands the basic values of our country and will seek their restoration. The last thing America needs is Rudy Giuliani as President.
