Urgent message to President Bush: use your executive power to save Terri
By Kaye Grogan
Amid vigils, prayers, and hope for justice to prevail, Terri Schiavo still lays helpless, hungering, and thirsting to death. Even the most vile amongst us are treated with more compassion than Terri. Are any of the terrorist prisoners held captive in our prisons starving to death? The obvious answer is NO!
Our Constitution protects and demands that murderers be put to death without unusual, and cruel punishment. So, why is Terri Schiavo being treated in such an inhumane way? Good question.
I am not a lawyer or a judge, but I do have enough common sense to be able to discern between what is legal and a blatant abuse of the judicial system. Without a signed legal document known as a "living will" I don't think Mr. Schiavo should have a legal leg to stand on. It comes down to a he said and he said situation. No, it's not a typo you're reading — it's a he said — he said claim. Nothing more nothing less.
As far as "living wills" go — it's easy for someone to state that they don't want to be put on life support while they are young and healthy. But I have a gut feeling, when push actually comes to shove — there's going to be a lot of pushing going on begging for help, if one thinks they are dying. This is probably what Terri would be saying if she could talk.
Somebody needs to take an axe to the life support machines, if they are going to cause so much controversy.
Once I was proud to say "I am an American" — but as each day passes by, and I see so many injustices occurring, I'm not so sure I feel this way anymore.
When I read where some people claim that starving and thirsting to death is really not such a painful death — I want proof, not just heresy to back up their ridiculous unorthodox analogy about death. I don't think anyone who has starved to death, have come back from the dead, to give testimonials to back up such a bizarre claim.
I would rather see "Dr. Death" assisting Terri to die a less painful death, than watch helplessly as her family is treated as common criminals as they enter the room of their beloved daughter guarded by policemen, as the smell of death fills the room.
When did we become such a callous uncaring nation? Innocent babies are slaughtered in the womb every 30 seconds while fat cats sit in their limos and palaces smoking their fancy cigars and drinking their high dollar Champagne, from the money grossed annually off of the blood of the most innocent amongst us from the abortion industry. And now — Terri Schiavo who has no other recourse is being slowly starved to death, as hordes of money is sent over in other countries to feed strangers, while our legislatures sit around twiddling their thumbs or shaking fists at those like Governor Jeb Bush, who understands how priceless life is, for everyone, including the most innocent amongst us.
By the way American Civil Liberties Union — where are you? Just as I thought — holed up somewhere afraid to defend Terri Schiavo's rights. Your silence should prove once and for all: you're selective in whose rights you will protect, while the rights of others are ignored by your organization. No wonder your credibility is a flat zero!
Democrats, most of you left the halls of Congress in protests of intervening and saving the life of an innocent woman, who lays dying as you go to fancy restaurants and gorge yourselves on expensive foods and wines. You claim the Republicans are using the Terri Schiavo incident as a political football — well, if it takes a political football to get things done, and be humane in the process — isn't it time you picked one up and started passing it around?
You've played partisan politics long enough — at the expense of many Americans.
Every time you partake of your food . . . I hope you're reminded of how you stood by and watched an innocent woman starved slowly to death (apparently) with your blessing.
And my message to President Bush: "If you have the executive privilege and power to pardon criminals from prison and the death penalty — you possess the same power to spare Terri Schiavo from a horrendous death."
And that's just my opinion!
