Send in the clowns
By Kaye Grogan

Well, well . . . the three ring circus is about to begin featuring Judge John Roberts, and the Judiciary Committee. So without further ado: "Send in the Clowns."

Starting with Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Arlen Specter, a moderate to liberal (mostly liberal) Republican from Pennsylvania — he is prepared to dance or should I say "tiptoe" around the abortion issue by asking U.S. Supreme Court Chief Justice "in-waiting" John Roberts, if he thinks the Constitution has a "right to privacy" clause. Come on now Mr. Specter, just ask Judge Roberts how he feels about abortion and be done with it!

When you hear a politician, make a statement that abortion is not going to be a "litmus test" in the confirmation hearings of potential high court judges — you can bet the opposite is true! Why else would the threat of a filibuster take center stage?

The National Organization for Women (NOW) has offered to assist President Bush in stacking the U.S. Supreme Court with their choice of nominees to fill the vacancies of Chief Justice William Rehnquist and Justice Sandra Day O' Connor. Hopefully the president said: "Thanks . . . but no thanks!" Allowing this group to have any input in the judicial process (in this particular case) would be like asking conservatives to nominate judges for a liberal president.

According to the leftist group NOW — women's rights could suffer a 100-year setback if Judge Roberts is confirmed. I certainly wouldn't shed one tear if the atrocious Roe V. Wade decision was at some point and time overturned. But I have shed a lot of tears over the 45 million babies who have been aborted since the legalization of abortion in 1973.

It would be better for women to have a lifetime to regret President Bush's choices to fill two vacant seats on the high court — than spend a lifetime regretting having an abortion.

Someone needs to tell NOW President Kim Gandy, that President Bush has earned the right during his term to select conservative judges to fill any vacancies on the bench, since he was reelected. Evidently, the majority trusts his ability to nominate judges who interpret the law correctly.

I bet Ms. Gandy wouldn't have a problem with liberal judges being selected for confirmation by a liberal Democratic president. But she does have a problem with President Bush nominating Judge John Roberts as Chief Justice of the U.S. Supreme Court.

While Arlen Specter is of the opinion that President Bush needs to nominate a woman to replace Justice O'Connor — to that I say: "God spare us from another so-called moderate woman on the high court. The swing votes of Justice O' Connor has helped to move America to the far left, and it may never recover."

Usually, a man with an impressive record that is associated with active judges like Roberts (along with his law credentials) he should be able to breeze through any confirmation hearing and pass with flying colors. And yet, Roberts will probably feel like he's been through a grinding machine — chewed up and spit out — after the duration of being questioned by the liberal Democrats on the Judiciary Committee is over.

My advice to anyone who will be watching the confirmation hearings of Judge Roberts is to pay close attention to how many of the committee members will misconstrue the intent of the U.S. Constitution, interjecting their own far-out views — especially on abortion issues. Not only is this scary — it is ludicrous that these people are in a position to either confirm or reject a man who can run circles around them, and knows the law inside and out.

I can hardly wait for the confirmation hearings to begin. In fact, I just stockpiled plenty of popcorn and sodas. I know that Senators Edward Kennedy, Patrick Leahy, and Charles Schumer will be their usual intimidating selves — barely able to mask their snarls, while Senators Joseph Biden, Diane Feinstein, Russell Feingold, and Richard Durbin will be less hostile, but at the same time wanting the same results as the aforementioned.

This spectacle promises to be one of the highlights of the year . . . so let the show begin!

And that's just my opinion!
