The denial of choice by some "pro-choicer" people
By Fred Hutchison
Pro-choice people fall into two categories, those who really care about a woman's right to choose and those who claim to be pro-choice but are actually pro-abortion and withhold information from women and try to persuade them that abortion is their only choice. A women who lacks complete information about her alternatives does not really have a basis for an intelligent choice.
A pro-choice advocate with integrity will have no problem with a well-informed women who decides to give birth and put her baby up for adoption — or decides to keep the baby. One who withholds information from a woman and pressures her to abort the baby is not pro-choice but is pro-abortion and anti-choice.
It is clear that abortion mills and certain political radicals are pro-abortion and anti-choice. I am having difficulty in figuring out whether columnist Robyn Blumner is pro-choice with integrity or pro-abortion and anti-choice.
Blumner's angry column which appeared in the Dispatch (7/24/06) was entirely negative about Crisis Pregnancy Centers. Some of what she said directly contradicts what friends of mine who worked as volunteers for that organization told me last week. These friends told me that Crisis Pregnancy Centers are devoted to giving pregnant women information that is withheld by the abortion mills. The idea of their abortion counseling is that as knowledge increases, abortion decisions driven by fear and ignorance decrease.
I trust these old friends who are highly intelligent and honest to a fault. But can I trust Blumner? Is she truly pro-choice, or is she demonizing Crisis Pregnancy Centers in order to push a pro-abortion and anti-choice agenda? The name-calling and malice in her column makes me wonder.
If women who regret their abortion want a voice in this debate — would Blumner object? If more complete information was given to pregnant woman about their alternatives, would Blumner object? Answers to these questions would help me find out if Blumner really cares about a woman's choice or has a more sinister agenda.
