Hardin ridicules opponents of lap dancing
By Fred Hutchison

Letter to the editor, the Columbus Dispatch

On 1/30/07, Mike Hardin ridiculed the opponents of lap dancing. His sniggering laugh lines indicate that he has talents as a stand up comic of blue humor. However, his reduction of Citizens for Community Values (CCV) to a cartoon caricature suggests that Harden has no idea why CCV opposes lap dancing. He seems to think that anyone who opposes lap dancing must be a fool. However, there are some intelligent and knowledgeable folks who think that anyone who supports lap dancing must be naive and gullible.

Just a few hard facts of life for our naive Mr. Harden. Any policeman will tell you that strip joints are gathering places for prostitution and drug dealers. Many of the strippers are also prostitutes. Many of the prostitutes are drug addicts and will do anything, no matter how degrading, to support the habit. The booming black market in kidnaping and human bondage keeps the strip clubs richly supplied with dancer-prostitutes.

Striptease is not purely an entertainment of a voyeuristic nature. Bumps and grinds are about coitus. Bumps and grinds by a girl sitting in your lap are the invitation of a prostitute. Mike, if you do not understand that, you living in a fantasy.

Prostitution is the exploitation of a woman in bondage to drugs and bondage to a violent pimp. The patron of the prostitute assists in the destruction of a lost woman. The Hollywood myth of the happy prostitute with a heart of gold is a cruel lie.

Many men commit adultery when they visit prostitutes. They cheat on their wives and thereby ruin their marriages, and their betrayed wives sometimes divorce them. The children of divorce are sometimes frightfully damaged for life. Suddenly, Harden's blue humor does not seem so funny.

A message from Stephen Stone, President, RenewAmerica

I first became acquainted with Fred Hutchison in December 2003, when he contacted me about an article he was interested in writing for RenewAmerica about Alan Keyes. From that auspicious moment until God took him a little more than six years later, we published over 200 of Fred's incomparable essays — usually on some vital aspect of the modern "culture war," written with wit and disarming logic from Fred's brilliant perspective of history, philosophy, science, and scripture.

It was obvious to me from the beginning that Fred was in a class by himself among American conservative writers, and I was honored to feature his insights at RA.

I greatly miss Fred, who died of a brain tumor on August 10, 2010. What a gentle — yet profoundly powerful — voice of reason and godly truth! I'm delighted to see his remarkable essays on the history of conservatism brought together in a masterfully-edited volume by Julie Klusty. Restoring History is a wonderful tribute to a truly great man.

The book is available at Amazon.com.
