Crazy liberals, cowardly conservatives
By Fred Hutchison
Bernard Goldberg wrote a book titled, Crazies to the Left of me, Wimps to the Right. As Tim Russert interviewed Goldberg about his book on TV, I wondered if there is some psychological or social basis for the existence of a bipolar polemical realm with the two poles of madness and cowardice.
In the movie The Madness of King George, the king had a form of mental illness which seemed to grow worse when his sycophants pandered to his whims, and sometimes went into remission when a doctor stood up to him.
Does the incoherence of the left represent madness? Not exactly. There is a special kind of incoherence in hysteria and a special kind of hysteria which is employed by bullies. An hysterical bully sounds like a mad man, but the hysteria can be a gambit for power. His bullying is evil but is not necessarily a sign of pathology. A clever and mean-spirited toddler can rule a household if the parents are wimps and cater to his tantrums.
Let us assume then, the left uses bullying tactics in order to gain power. If conservatives are like the parents who are wimps, and allow themselves to be silenced by the screaming babies of the left — then the left can rule, just as a clever toddler can rule a household by having tantrums.
If the tantrums are indulged for a long time, the bullying child might turn into a monster. If the left is indulged for a long time, the bullying hysteria of some leftists might develop into authentic madness. The high rate of suicide for gays and radical feminists might suggest the progression of the hysterical narcissist into madness.
Bullies of the left have personally tried to silence me through hysterical intimidation and insults on the following topics: illegal aliens, affirmative action, politically-correct speech codes designed by feminists, the gay agenda, terrorism, the war in Iraq, evolution and global warming. I have escaped persecution about abortion but many have not. Every time I have had a bully of the left in my face, my response has been, "I will not allow intimidation tactics or slander to silence me."
Years ago when I performed governmental audits, I assumed that if the auditee tried to intimidate me, he must be hiding something. As bloodhound who is on the scent, I could not rest until I found out what he was hiding. Once the auditee learned that I could not be intimidated, he quit his bulling tactics and switched to covert stratagems.
I regard intimidation from the left as a clue to which issues urgently need attention. In such cases, I assume that some foul smelling business, concealed by the left, needs exposure. As I writer, I want to open the door which the lefties have locked, bolted and placed a vicious attack dog to guard. I want to shine a light on the rotten thing in that dark room. Half the battle in defeating evil is to expose it, to identify it and to give it a name.
I took an interest in Alan Keyes several years ago when he had a television talk show. I noticed that he vigorously inveighed against guests who were defending or rationalizing terrorism. Issue by issue, he stood against what Goldberg calls the "crazies" of the left.
Let conservatives take note of the courage of Keyes, repent of their cowardice, and stand up to the intimidation tactics of the left.
