USDA approved: illegal immigrants

New Spanish-language food stamp ads are geared toward Latinos

Just when you thought the US government couldn't possibly behave any more irresponsibly, they do something to once again prove us all wrong. The latest example is the effort being made by the US Department of Agriculture to distribute food stamps within the Latino community. It seems our tax dollars are being spent on Spanish language television advertisements in order to "promote" still another massive government giveaway.

Ostensibly, this marketing effort is to provide information to Spanish speaking citizens and other legal immigrants who would qualify based on the USDA's eligibility guidelines. Those guidelines apparently include a number of non-citizens in the rather loosely worded definition. It gets even more muddled by the following from the USDA website:

A number of States have their own programs to provide benefits to immigrants who do not meet the regular Food Stamp Program eligibility requirements.

California, among other states, evidently allows greater leeway in determining food stamp eligibility for immigrants. It just so happens that these television ads are being run through Univision, a Spanish-language network based in Los Angeles. The ads are also stating that "immigrants" need not worry about their "status" and are encouraged to apply. States are evidently barred (by the federal Privacy Act) from denying an applicant any benefits if the applicant refuses to provide a social security number.

It isn't difficult to imagine what would be the logical result. Indeed, it goes even further — the USDA is apparently so enthused about this "outreach" that bus transportation is provided for Spanish-speaking applicants, not to mention recruiting of volunteers to hand out Spanish language brochures plus assist applicants in completing the forms.

This push by the USDA has the potential for illegals to tap into the food stamp program in unprecedented numbers. The system is already inundated with the children of illegals due to the insanity of our laws. If Juan and Margarita cross the border illegally while Margarita is pregnant, and manage to evade the INS until childbirth, their offspring automatically becomes a US citizen, "entitled" to anything and everything our tax dollars have to offer. Anchor babies have already put an enormous strain on our resources — add the enthusiastic USDA advertising program and the parents can easily join the party.

On Tuesday October 17th, we officially became a nation of 300 million people, according to the US Census Bureau. There wasn't a lot of fanfare from the government about this "milestone." The reason? In all probability we reached that mark some time ago, due to the number of illegal immigrants already in this country (11 million to 20 million plus according to various estimates). Obviously with more of the public becoming aware of and increasingly angry about the illegal immigration problem, our government officials are not interested in calling further attention to the issue

Under enormous public pressure, the US Senate finally voted to build 700 miles of fence along our southern border. In the meantime, President Bush continues to push hard for a "pathway to citizenship" — a pitifully transparent euphemism for amnesty that would insult the intelligence of a third-grader. Why does Bush continue to ignore the conservative base on this issue? The answer is complex, but the short answer is that George W. Bush is no conservative, and never was — he is a globalist. Author Jerome Corsi has written of a "shadow government" being run by the Bush Administration, with the merging of the U.S., Mexico and Canada — and the virtual erasing of our borders as a goal. It's some scary stuff.

So how do we stem the tide of illegal immigrants when our own government is encouraging it? It's going to take a number of things, including increasing pressure on our elected leaders to act. Perhaps even more so, it will take gutsy action at the local level. The city of Escondido, California just approved an ordinance prohibiting landlords from renting to illegal immigrants. Escondido joins other cities such as Hazelton, Pa in passing similar "get-tough" measures, that have also included stiff penalties for employers hiring illegals. Making it tougher locally for illegal immigrants to obtain housing or employment is a very effective means of drying up the current flood.

With a federal government willing to stamp illegal aliens as "USDA approved," local and state laws may be our last and best hope of solving the crisis.
