What Truth means to me
By Sam Weaver

My father is a brilliant man. His knowledge of physics and mathematics is astounding. He has been a lay preacher, and I have heard him minister to several diverse congregations. I learned not too terribly long ago that he has read the Bible through from Genesis to Revelation every year since he was in his early twenties. (He just turned 77 last month.) In my whole life, I have NEVER witnessed my father (or my mother for that matter) ever commit what any person save an anti-spanking advocate would call a sin. [I'm not saying that my father and mother are sinless; I'm just saying that I never personally witnessed them breaking any law of nature or of nature's God.]

As a country boy growing up in a tiny, remote farming community, my Dad had only one role model. His father — my grandfather who passed away more than a year before I was born — was my Dad's ideal father. Their shared philosophy was that a father's duty is breadwinner. Providing for the essentials, necessities and material goods of the family is the role of the father. The mother's job consists of raising and nurturing the children.

Partly a result of that simplistic philosophy — and partly (and somewhat ironically) because his complicated, analytical answers to math and science homework questions or to any philosophical questions that I might have asked him were WAY above my head — my father and I rarely communicated when I was younger. However, when I did ask him a question and could comprehend the answer, those answers ALWAYS made a huge impression on me. To this day, my Dad is amazed when I recall something that he told me two or three decades ago. He thinks I have an amazing memory. In reality, he's just too modest to understand the profound impact that his intellect and his wisdom had on me.

In hindsight, what psychologists and so-called "experts" might call a gross lack of bonding and interaction between me and my "father figure" turned out to be a great blessing from God. Had I bonded and been able to communicate with my father, I would probably have made him and his philosophy my image of truth. I would have been imitating a man (my earthly father) and not looking to God (my heavenly Father), His Word and His Will, as the only source of Truth.

My parents, through their faith and their wonderful example, planted a seed in me. As a rebel, I fought it with all my might. Yet, I made sort of a half-hearted decision back in 1984 to seek God for truth. The undeniable answers to that mustard-seed-sized grain of faith that I had in God has turned my half-hearted decision into a life-long endeavor.

I would NEVER claim to know Truth! In fact, the more I learn, the more I realize that Truth is far beyond my — or any human's — grasp. It took at least half a dozen years into my philosophical quest to even learn what the definition of Truth is! Truth — with a capital "T" — is nothing more and nothing less than the Word and the Will of the Creator of the Universe and the Author of Law.

No human — no matter how smart, creative, pious, righteous or just — will EVER approach comprehension of the overall Word and Will of God. Man is fallible and his mind is finite. Man is bound and governed by moral, ethical, fiscal and physical law. God, on the other hand, is infallible and His mind is infinite. He is omniscient, omnipresent and omnipotent. He is the AUTHOR of moral, ethical, fiscal and physical law.

America's Founders and Framers, as a whole — as a group, understood all of this. They wanted absolutely no part of any national establishment of religion under which one man or one relatively small group of men could be allowed to dictate his/their own human understanding of "Truth" — his/their peculiar understanding of the Word and the Will of God — upon the whole people. Liberty was the goal. Bear in mind that the definition of liberty is near absolute individual freedom AS LONG AS THE INDIVIDUAL DOES NOT VIOLATE THE LAWS OF NATURE AND OF NATURE'S GOD. The definition of justice is that every individual is held accountable for any such violation.

Many Founders and Framers, individually, admonished over and over again that Religion (i. e., the duties one owes to God) and Morality (i. e., the duties one owes to fellow man) are necessary and vital to good government and are the very essence of liberty. Without Religion & Morality, there is no liberty and no justice. Together, the duties owed to God and the duties owed to fellow man substantiate Truth.

My search for Truth began in 1984 with a simple prayer: "God, IF You exist, PLEASE reveal Yourself to me and show me Truth!" The amazing "coincidences" and timely availability of knowledge that continues to drop into my lap to this day leave me with absolutely no shadow of doubt that God is answering my prayers.

The opposite of truth, of course, is lies. If Truth is the Word and the Will of God, then lies are the words and the desires of man; or, more precisely, the subtle and beguiling deceptions of the Great Deceiver: Satan. I've learned that if you're looking for Truth, you MUST weigh the words, goals and actions of politicians, educators, writers, and all so-called experts — INCLUDING PRIESTS, PASTORS AND RABBIS! — against the Word and the Will of God as expressed in the Bible. And never neglect your own conscience and common sense! However, if the Spirit of Truth — the Holy Spirit — is not in you, then you will fall for deceptions and enticing lies every time.

I have a relatively new prayer that I now bring to the Creator and Author of Law quite often. It goes something like this: "Lord God, PLEASE pour out Your love and mercy like a mighty river upon those who have been deceived (i. e., by education, media, pop culture, peers, etc.); but PLEASE, do not hold back your wrath and righteous judgment against those who knowingly, willfully and purposely deceive others with what they know to be falsehoods and lies."
