LIFE NEWS — Over the years, Oprah Winfrey has seemingly evolved into America's mom. After her TV career, she sounds like an evangelist preaching a feminist substitute to replace religion in her monthly Oprah Magazine. Her August issue carries this motivational nugget of Oprah wisdom on the cover: "We all want to feel radiant, joyful, and alive. It starts with choosing love -- in any form." No mention of faith, but no surprise there.... (more)

TIMOTHY P. CARNEY — George Zirwas was known to be part of a small ring of gay predatory priests in the Pittsburgh diocese who got teenaged boys drunk and sexually assaulted them. Even after the ring was exposed and Zirwas's compatriots were put on trial in 1988, prosecutors couldn't charge Zirwas with a crime, although multiple criminal activities of his had been reported to the Pittsburgh diocese.... R.T. NEARY — The one undeniable truth in this great historic Land of the Pilgrims today is that we live by the lie. Disseminating untruths is not only acceptable but applauded, if they are phrased not to offend certain selected elements in our social structure. Ironically, the one exception is if one's utterances seem to be echoing the bedrock principles which led to the founding of the Bay State and ultimately these United States. To some it may sound strange, but just referring to our nation as a Republic will set off alarm bells in numerous circles.... (more)

WASHINGTON TIMES — Oregon Gov. Kate Brown positioned herself early on as a leader of the anti-Trump opposition, but the state's never-ending panoply of protest activity has backfired on her re-election bid with voters suffering from resistance fatigue. Ms. Brown, who was expected to coast to victory in deep-blue Oregon, has found herself deadlocked in the latest polls with state Rep. Knute Buehler, an affable orthopedic surgeon whose moderate brand of Republicanism is attracting crossover voters.... (more)

WASHINGTON TIMES — Melania Trump walked into a conference the other day to summon attention to her "first lady's project," using her own bully pulpit to curb cyber-bullying of children. Who wouldn't report with respectful appreciation what the woman was saying, about a major problem confronting our children today? She found out who, after receiving an onslaught of online bullying for daring to separate herself from her husband's political attack style.... (more)

NATIONAL REVIEW — A progressive Democrat earned his fellow left-wing protesters' wrath earlier this month for the act of carrying an American flag. Paul Welch, who describes himself as a "slightly progressive leftist," was protesting the right-wing group Patriot Prayer's August 4 rally in Portland, Ore. As he carried his American flag alongside other counter-protesters, several black-clad Antifa members carrying various weapons demanded he hand over the flag, calling it a "fascist symbol."... ANDREW C. MCCARTHY — For months, these columns have contended that, on the question whether President Trump should agree to a request by Special Counsel Robert Mueller III for an interview, the burden of persuasion has been imposed on the wrong party. That is, the president should not even be asked to submit to questioning at this point; the prosecutor must first establish that the president (1) is implicated in a serious crime and (2) has information or evidence that the prosecutor is unable to obtain from any other source.... ANDREW C. MCCARTHY — The thing to bear in mind is that the president of the United States does not "attempt" to fire anyone in the executive branch. The chief executive either fires an inferior executive official or he does not. "Attempt" does not enter into it.... (more)

STEPHEN MOORE — Take a wild guess what country is reducing its greenhouse gas emissions the most? Canada? Britain? France? India? Germany? Japan? No, no, no, no, no and no. The answer to that question is the United States of America. Wow! How can that be? This must be a misprint. Fake news. America never signed the Kyoto Protocol some two decades ago. We never enacted a carbon tax. We don't have a cap and trade carbon emission program. That evironmental villain Donald Trump pulled America out of the Paris climate accord that was signed by almost the entire rest of the civilized world.... (more)

WASHINGTON TIMES — The South African government has begun the process of seizing white-owned farmland, reportedly filing legal papers seeking to expropriate two farms for one-tenth of their estimated value. The filings, involving two game farms in the northern province of Limpopo, come as the African National Congress government is seeking to amend the country's constitution to allow outright seizures of land with no compensation. The ANC's leader also has recently argued that pure expropriation is allowed anyway now "in the public interest."... (more)
