NEWSMAX — Iran's clerical rulers risk a legitimacy crisis as popular anger has boiled up at the way the state handled a passenger plane crash, which the military took three days to admit was caused by an Iranian missile fired in error. Video clips on Twitter showed protesters in Tehran on Saturday chanting "Death to the dictator," a reference to Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei. Reuters could not independently verify the footage. It followed a welter of criticism in Iran.... (more)

VICTOR DAVIS HANSON — After losing its top strategist, military commander, and arch-terrorist, Qasem Soleimani, the Iranian theocracy is weighing responses. One, Iran can quiet down and cease military provocations. After attacking tankers off its coast, destroying an oil refinery in Saudi Arabia, shooting down a U.S. drone, and being responsible for the killing and wounding of Americans in Iraq, Iran could now keep quiet.... NATIONAL REVIEW — More than 200 members of Congress signed an amicus brief last week in support of the defendant in June Medical Services LLC. v. Gee, the hotly watched upcoming Supreme Court case. The plaintiffs are challenging the constitutionality of a Louisiana state law that requires abortionists to hold admission privileges at a hospital within 30 miles of their clinic. In their brief, the amici asked the Court to craft a ruling that reaches beyond the merits of the case by clarifying the "undue burden" standard laid out in Hellerstedt and "tak[ing] up the issue of whether Roe [v. Wade] and [Planned Parenthood v.] Casey should be reconsidered and, if appropriate, overturned."... (more)

JERRY NEWCOMBE — In 2008, Abby Johnson, the manager of the Bryan, Texas (100 miles from Houston), Planned Parenthood, became that organization's Employee of the Year. By 2009, she quit for conscience' sake. Why? That year, for the first time, she saw an ultrasound of an abortion of a 13-week-old unborn child in her own clinic. This was not a blob of tissue, a clump of cells, a non-living being. This was a baby that was fighting for his life.... (more)

BRYAN FISCHER — Homosexuals have been allowed to serve openly in the U.S. military since the disastrously misguided repeal of Don't Ask, Don't Tell in late 2010. President Obama was able to ram the repeal through just under the wire because the Democrats temporarily held both houses of Congress, a situation that would change with the election in the fall of 2010. Elections have consequences, and open homosexuality in the military was one of the unfortunate consequences of naive voters placing regressives in office.... (more)

LLOYD MARCUS — During his heartfelt Golden Globes speech, Tom Hanks said his five children are braver, stronger, and wiser than him. Please do not think I am beating up on Tom Hanks for seeing this a little differently. I am simply pointing out that Hanks downplaying his fatherly position is a mindset we see reflected in practically every family movie and sitcom today.... (more)
