Don't let them lie to you. The Republican leadership in the United States Senate can defund Planned Parenthood if they are as pro-life as they say they are.

If Senate leadership doesn't move aggressively to defund Planned Parenthood when they return to Washington next week, it will be for one reason only: they care more about the Washington Post than decapitated babies.

By now, many readers have seen the undercover videos released by the Center for Medical Progress which expose the ghoulish and Nazi-esque barbarism of Planned Parenthood. This barbarism includes severing the heads of newly born infants so their brains can be shipped to medical researchers while they're still fresh.

If self-proclaimed pro-life senators won't go the mat to stop the practice of cutting the heads off of babies, what on earth would it take for them to do the right thing? It is almost impossible to imagine an issue that demands more whatever-it-takes action than this one.

Because of President Obama's "God bless you, Planned Parenthood" value system, the only practical way the Republican-led Senate can terminate funding for Planned Parenthood is by attaching a defunding amendment to what is called "must-pass" legislation. Such legislation is called "must-pass" because, well, it must pass or terrible things, like a government shutdown, will happen. (Perish the thought!)

The government's authority to spend our money ends on October 1. A budget deal (in the form of a Continuing Resolution) must be approved and signed by Obama by then. The simplest budget proposal is for the $528.4 million in taxpayer funding for Planned Parenthood to be shifted from Planned Parenthood's 665 clinics to the 13,540 community health centers which provide health services to women but don't dismember babies in the womb.

If a Continuing Resolution is not signed by October 1, the wheels of government grind to a halt. (Well, some of them do. Estimates are that about 83% of the federal government keeps perking right along, lack of money or no.)

This is the dreaded government shutdown Mitch McConnell fears more than death itself.

Why? Because he lives in an ongoing state of terror that the Washington Post will blame him for it, and he can't bear the thought. His reputation in the eyes of a media which despises him is apparently all that matters. He is paralyzed by a craven, servile and trembling dread that the low-information media will make him look bad in the eyes of the low-information voters who read their stuff. He has forgotten the Lord's admonition, "Woe to you when all men speak well of you."

In truth, it would be President Obama shutting down the government, since Congress would, under this scenario, be sending him a budget that would keep government churning along without missing a beat. But the truth matters little to the media, and apparently even less to Mitch McConnell.

Sen. McConnell has pledged that there will be no government shutdown on his watch, meaning he has already signaled surrender before the first shot has been fired.

The only thing that can possibly move him to listen to the cries of helpless babies rather than the bleating of the Washington Post is the American people melting down the phone lines in D.C. We must be the voice for those who cannot speak for themselves.

The phone lines must be burned up. The stream of calls must be incessant, unremitting, and insistent. Our senators must be urged, politely but assertively, to defund Planned Parenthood and to defund it now.

Politicians without a moral core only see the light when they feel the heat. Well, it's time for us to turn up the heat in Washington.

Call 202-224-3121 and ask for the offices of your two senators.
