Who's the intolerant bigot? The lesbian sister

The meanstream media has been all atwitter this week over the spat between the Cheney sisters – Liz, a candidate for the U.S. Senate in Wyoming, and her lesbian sister Mary – regarding same-sex marriage. Actually, you can't even call this a spat, since only one of the two sisters is bickering with the other in this little family war.

And the one doing the sniping here is not the heterosexual, happily-married, Christian sister. The one who is lobbing the grenades here is her perpetually aggrieved, sexually-confused, gay-activist sibling.

I'm not sure what you call it when one sister is trying to pick a very public fight with the other, and the second sister won't fight back, but instead turns the other cheek, just as Jesus taught. I would call it intolerance and bigotry and a form of bullying.

In other words, Liz Cheney is not the intolerant bigot here. Mary Cheney is.

Liz Cheney has always expressed love for her lesbian sister, and said that marriage is simply a matter on which they disagree. Mary Cheney has always been welcome in her home, along with her lesbian partner, and the children in Mary Cheney's household have always been welcome in Liz Cheney's home.

When the entire brood lived in the D.C. area, it was a family custom for the entire clan to meet for Sunday lunch in Liz's home, where, week after week, she showed grace, hospitality, love and kindness to her lesbian sister and her paramour.

In other words, Liz Cheney is a living demonstration of what tolerance is.

Mary Cheney, on the other hand, is a living demonstration of what intolerance and bigotry and hatred look like. And while Mary certainly fancies herself the tolerant one, the truth is just the other way round.

Here is the dictionary definition of tolerance, which by all lights is just about the only virtue left on which our entire culture can agree: "the ability or willingness to tolerate something, in particular the existence of opinions or behavior that one does not necessarily agree with."

So Liz has clearly manifested this Christian virtue in abundant proportions. She has been willing to manifest love, kindness and courtesy to her sister despite "the existence of opinions or behavior that [she] does not necessarily agree with."

Mary Cheney, on the other hand, has cut off all contact and communication with Liz, has blasted her support of natural marriage on Facebook, and has accused Liz of "treat[ing] my family as second class citizens," when of course she did nothing of the sort. In fact, quite the reverse.

Mary's "wife" has called Liz's position "offensive" and Mary has made it clear that she will not be seeing her sibling at Christmas, and has all but declared that her sister is now dead to her.

Sticking the knife in and twisting it, she informed Politico this week that "I'm not supporting Liz's candidacy. By supporting, I mean not working, not contributing, and not voting for."

Tolerance for Mary Cheney, as it is for all homosexual activists, really means "I will be nice to you if you agree with me. If you don't, I will demonize you and cut you off at the knees."

So if, as Merriam-Webster has it, tolerance is a "willingness to accept feelings, habits, or beliefs that are different from your own," what does all this make Mary Cheney? It makes her, by her own standards, an intolerant, hateful, heterophobic bigot and bully. Who knew?
