The publishing standards of RenewAmerica

The mission and purpose of RenewAmerica is to strengthen America's grassroots through informing and equipping them upon a foundation that centers in the Declaration of Independence, the Constitution, and biblical premises.

As our official statement of purpose says,
[RenewAmerica] has no philosophy, image, or agenda beyond this one unifying premise: America must return to its founding principles if it is to survive.
Because of this inclusive, simple focus, we invite — as well as tolerate — a diversity of views that reflect our principled mission.

This means that RenewAmerica gives its writers and representatives reasonable latitude to speak their minds from their own unique perspective. We have no desire to stifle responsible views.

Individual responsibility

Our writers are united in their commitment to those unique ideals that are essential to American liberty. At the same time, we at RenewAmerica wish to reiterate the disclaimer we publish at the bottom of all columns that appear on the website:
The views expressed by RenewAmerica columnists are their own and do not necessarily reflect the position of RenewAmerica or its affiliates.
The same ultimately holds for writers of "analysis" pieces we publish — as well as all other writers who post at the site, or whose articles we may feature (or excerpt) from any source.

So that our writers might have sufficient freedom and latitude to express themselves (within RenewAmerica's clearly-defined commitment to our nation's most basic principles), we prefer to place the responsibility for the views of our writers upon the writers themselves. That's the only reasonable — and realistic — way to foster genuine diversity of opinion, as well as to inform our readers of a multiplicity of viewpoints.

(Additionally, the originality of our writers' work is also their own responsibility. The burden is on each writer — not RenewAmerica — to avoid willful, as well as unintended, misuse of others' ideas or statements and make appropriate attribution.)

Requirements of credible journalism

In view of the above, it would be inappropriate to conclude that a particular writer's views necessarily reflect the views of RenewAmerica or its editorial staff. We believe our disclaimer is sufficiently clear. So is the appeal of common sense — which disallows the notion that a publisher is restricted to publishing only his own personal views, or those he particularly favors. Such an idea is inconsistent with the premises and standards of serious media.

Beyond our basic approach to publishing, of course, RenewAmerica has the right and obligation to take fair and appropriate action against any of our writers (or posters) who may cross any line of customary propriety. We seek debate that centers in ideas, arguments, and facts — not personal attacks or other inflammatory communication. Should a writer cross the line of reasonable decorum, we have the option of removing his or her writings, or removing the writer as a contributor altogether. Our call.

Even in such a circumstance, our goal remains the good-faith publication of diverse views, including views that challenge our readers. We intend to treat our readers with respect — letting them choose from a marketplace of sincere, thoughtful, grassroots-minded ideas, rather than make their choices for them.

Welcome to the informed community of RenewAmerica!
