ALICIA POWE — The Republican Party has swept all of the special elections to replace members of Congress tapped by President Trump for posts in his administration. But there's another one coming up: next week's GOP runoff in Alabama between seated temporary Sen. Luther Strange, the state's former attorney general, and Judge Roy Moore, the state's former Supreme Court chief justice.... (more)

WESLEY PRUDEN — We've heard the words and music of this song before. The hoariest cliche in American politics, presented as accomplished fact by every wise head in academe and media after every wipe-out election, is that the losing party is finished. Kaput. Destroyed. Done for. Dead, as in the graveyard.... (more)

WASHINGTON TIMES — Investigative reporter Sharyl Attkisson says media outlets are "diving deeply into minutiae" to avoid a stark development: President Trump's previously ridiculed "wiretapping" claims appear to be true. Ms. Attkisson has warned of the weaponization of intelligence agencies since her laptop for CBS News stories was hacked on multiple occasions in 2013. An op-ed she wrote for The Hill on Wednesday presented an extensive case that U.S. intelligence agencies under former President Barack Obama were manipulated for political purposes -- and that pundits are willfully ignoring it.... WASHINGTON TIMES — Sparring with celebrities and Al Gore over global warming may not be what Roy Spencer had in mind when he earned his Ph.D., but it's certainly become a bustling sideline for the University of Alabama in Huntsville climatologist. A month after rebutting Mr. Gore's documentary "An Inconvenient Sequel," Mr. Spencer has published another short e-book, this one challenging statements by Jennifer Lawrence, Bill Nye, Stevie Wonder and others linking global warming to this year's active hurricane season.... CAL THOMAS — While campaigning for the presidency, Donald Trump more than once referred to the United Nations as a "useless" organization and "not a friend of democracy." In his speech Tuesday to the 72nd Session of the United Nations General Assembly, he apparently has discovered the often dysfunctional body can be useful, if it adopts the reforms he is proposing and accepts an agenda that includes uniting to stop North Korea from obtaining nuclear weapons and missiles to strike at U.S and other targets.... ART MOORE — President Trump's tough talk regarding the North Korean nuclear threat in his U.N. speech -- including referring to dictator Kim Jong Un as "rocket man" and threatening to "totally destroy" the communist nation -- has rattled Trump's critics in establishment media and the Democratic Party, but some in the international community appreciated his "blunt, honest approach," according to U.N. Ambassador Nikki Haley.... (more)

RARE — A professor at a John Jay college in Manhattan has been placed on administrative leave after he tweeted that he's glad to teach "future dead cops." Economics professor Michael Isaacson, 29, caught his moment in the spot light last week when he appeared on Fox News to discuss his remarks and his status as an Antifa activist. The tweet, which read in full, "Some of y'all might think it sucks being an anti-fascist teaching at John Jay College, but I think it's a privilege to teach future dead cops," was roundly condemned. On Friday, the school announced that Isaacson is being placed on leave, the New York Daily News reports.... (more)

NEWSMAX — Freedom of expression is in jeopardy at U.S. colleges and universities, according to a survey of students conducted by John Villasenor at Brookings. Villasenor noted that the survey was vital because students are "de facto arbiters of free expression on campus ... if a significant percentage of students believe that views they find offensive should be silenced, those views will in fact be silenced."... CLIFF KINCAID — The comical publication the Onion ran a special volume, Homeland Insecurity, with the headline, "Run for Your Lives." I thought of that in the wake of the decision by hard-liners Steve Bannon and Sebastian Gorka to voluntarily leave the White House rather than continue to fight for rational pro-American policies in the Trump Administration against what has been called the Deep State.... PUBLIUS HULDAH — The danger of an Article V convention (which made James Madison "tremble," caused Alexander Hamilton "dread," and Chief Justice John Jay to say that another convention would impose an "extravagant risque") is this: the delegates to the convention can run away: instead of proposing amendments to our existing Constitution, they can write a completely new Constitution with a new -- and easier -- mode of ratification....
