In 2011, during the 4th of July holiday, I suffered a ¾ inch-wide blow-out of my “duodenum” (the first part of my small intestine, where the stomach normally empties its contents during the initial stages of digestion, an ulceration that caused excruciating pain while my soon–to-be-Advanced EMT son Callan drove me (and my wife DeeAnn) to the nearest hospital for surgery in what amounted to a major emergency that had been developing from years of unusual stress due to our family’s many years of extremely challenging political work, while we undertook at the same time to design and build our family’s farmhome entirely by ourselves on our essentially “free farm” as a family project. A very skilled surgeon repaired this damage to my duodenum and arranged for me to recover during several days of bedrest I spent in the hospital without any significant food while I was sustained intravenously.

This digestive condition had evidently been developing during years of unusual stress caused by many factors:

1. The first of these stress-causing factors was three years I spent from 1987 to 1990 seeking to overturn an oppressive 40-acre agricultural zone that our county imposed in 1983 upon a large area of our state, a "regulatory taking" that clearly violated the Fifth Amendment to the Constitution, a fact I argued repeatedly at public hearings after discovering the damage this taking caused those who owned less than 40 acres, such as an injured California fireman who was unable to build a home on 16 acres I later acquired from his daughter, who inherited the farm after her father died essentially of a broken heart (his writings revealed): he was unable to proceed with his dream of moving onto the farm in a timely way. As I recall, he first learned of he 40-acre zone one day after the final deadline before that deadline took effect, a delay attributable to his back injury. He thus had no way to meet the deadline on his own. Similar hardships (according to a statistical report I later came across) caused the entire farm community at issue to suffer a precipitous drop in population, desirability, and value after the arbitrary 1983 "taking" by the county deliberately changed the nature of that long-established farm community (an outcome intended by the County Commission and its advisers who wanted to substantially limit farmers in their options, according to decades-old paperwork I was later given by county officials). The County therefore substantially stripped farmers of their property rights so the County could control the long-term nature of that part of the County.

The above fireman's daughter—for whom I had done extensive work helping with a "family-centered" educational organization she wanted to establish in our state—gave me and DeeAnn the 16-acre farm we live on "virtually for free," with none of the "customary conditions" normally required in such a transfer of property (such as a substantial down payment, substantial monthly payments, etc. She stressed that she lacked the means to compensate me for the work I had previously done for her organization and also indicated she had little interest at the time in holding onto a property so thoroughly damaged in its value and use by the County. (Note that prior to the 40-acre zone, the fireman's 16 acres had for at least 40 years been part of a one-acre County-wide zone in which single-family dwellings could routinely be built. After the 40-acre zone was installed throughout most of the county, all new homes required separate parcels of 40 acres in order for a new home to approved. helping her with her organization a reasonable time to work out a final settlement amount, etc.) Since both of DeeAnn's parents had willed her a modest inheritance, and both my father and stepmother were unexpectly killed as a result of a head-on accident as well as my father and stepmother
