The Power of Goodness

Goodness might be hard to define with words because we understand goodness instinctively and intuitively, without having to define it; we know goodness when we see and experience it. Goodness is part of our higher human nature, planted within our minds and hearts by God who is the source of goodness. Of course, I speak here of the biblical God who created us in His image, including our intrinsic gravitational pull toward goodness. We love the goodness that exists between man and wife, between parent and child. We love the goodness of a beautiful sunrise or sunset, the beauty from atop Mt. LeConte here in Tennessee, and the beauty of El Capitan from the base of Yosemite Valley in California. We appreciate the goodness of modern scientific achievements such as genetic engineering, nuclear power, orbiting satellites, computers, the internet, cell phones, etc.

We are also born into our animal bodies, genetic and biological wonders, one cell from which is more complex than the world’s most powerful supercomputer. Nevertheless, because of our animal nature, instincts, wants, and needs, we are sometimes drawn toward greed, theft, adultery, violence, and even murder. Our minds are free to choose goodness over evil, or the other way around. The mystery of human evil is rooted in the mystery of human freedom.

Apparently, the Devil is at work within us to pervert and magnify our animal nature, at the expense of our Divine nature. He seeks to snuff out our goodness, snuff out God’s Holy Spirit within us, tugging us away from God’s gravitational orbit, to make us merely animals – even very intelligent animals. Adolph Hitler, Joseph Stalin, Idi Amin, and Osama bin Laden were such animals – God’s Holy Spirit and His goodness were dead within them. The Pharoah of Exodus was also such an animal. He hardened his heart repeatedly against God, and against God’s people, but in the end God hardened His heart against Pharoah.

How powerful is God? He is all powerful; He created the Universe out of nothing. God possesses infinite power – He’s a winner. How powerful is the Devil? His power is severely limited. The Devil’s power lies only in the perversion of the human nature that God created – the power of human evil. Human evil can wreak the havoc of war, mass murder, slavery, and human suffering on a massive scale – nothing to sneeze at. But the Devil can’t create a single neutrino or a single photon – he’s a loser. We see from history that great human evils eventually are confronted and defeated by the collective power of great human goodness. The Roman Empire, the Spanish Inquisition, Nazi Germany, and the Soviet Union – all wiped off the face of the earth and relegated to the foul-smelling dustbin of history.

Now is such a time for all good men to man up, to feel the surging power of God’s terrible swift sword of goodness and justice, to defend all-American life and liberty, to defeat the worsening legal and cultural insanity around us – to be on the winning side. God has commanded us in the Bible to hate evil. He has ordered us to have a burning hatred of only one thing – hatred of evil. When good men come together in mass, when good people finally realize that, with God’s blessing and help, they are invincible.

“I cannot praise a fugitive and cloistered virtue, unexercised and unbreathed, that never sallies out and sees her adversary but slinks out of the race, where that immortal garland is to be run for, not without dust and heat.” John Milton

When bad men combine, the good must associate; else they will fall, one by one…” Edmund Burke
