China watch – 3

Day by day, we are witnessing the build-up of Communist China in pursuit of its ultimate goal to depose the United States as "the world's lone super power."

One of several methods utilized by the Chinese to accomplish this is to make inroads with U.S. allies, by luring them into being less reliant on America strategically – in trade issues and every other field. China attempts this first gradually and then in larger steps. The obvious purpose, ultimately, is to weaken ties between America and U.S.-friendly nations worldwide.

Such Chinese-inflicted conflict – according to a Wall Street Journal report – is in no way confined to America's relationships with nations that are indifferent to the U.S., but includes its closest allies.

We are indebted to WSJ columnist William A. Galston, who detects that China's maneuvers pose a "potential" threat to defensive cooperation between the U.S. and Israel.

The U.S.- Israel alliance has been strong ever since America played a leading role in Israel's creation following World War II. That friendship has now been put to a test. Writing in the Journal, Galston explains that China has offered $2 billion to operate the Israeli port of Haifa for 25 years starting in 2021. Israel's transportation employers accepted the offer. The problem: The offer was accepted with no input from Israel's security cabinet or its National Security Council.

Galston notes that many Israeli officials say they need to balance the benefits of their longstanding security relationship with the U.S. with a newly-developed commercial relationship with China. This development is one of hundreds – perhaps more – of worldwide examples of what China-watchers view as Beijing's play for "all the marbles" in world politics, likely envisioning a destroyed America in the process.
